We are already in a new month and with it comes a new birthstone. This month’s birthstone is Opal. The national stone of Australia and the birthstone for October.
It detracts light because of its natural structure.. Depending on the conditions in which it formed, it can take on many colors. Precious opal ranges from clear through white, gray, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, magenta, rose, pink, slate, olive, brown, and black. Of these hues, the black opals are the rarest, whereas white and greens are the most common. Opals vary in optical density from opaque to semitransparent
For gemstone use most Opals are cut to form a cabochon which looks smooth and without facets. ( pictured above) Although fire opals are always faceted and reflect the beautiful ” fire” coloured light.( pictured below)
Almost 95% of the worlds Opals come from Australia with the town of Cooper Ready being the main mining area for this gemstone hence why it is the national stone of Australia.
